Measurement

AI PR measurement and reporting tools

Share of voice, sentiment and campaign reporting.

Measurement is where PR software goes to invent numbers. Almost every product in this category ships a proprietary score — an index, a rating, a health number — and almost none of them publish how it is calculated. That is a problem, because the whole value of a measurement tool is that you can defend its output to somebody who was not in the room.

So transparency carries the most weight here of any category on the site. We ask a simple question of every tool: can you reconstruct the number. If a score moves and nobody can explain why, it is not measurement, it is decoration.

Advertising value equivalency deserves a specific mention, because it is still being sold. It assigns coverage the notional cost of buying equivalent advertising space, a method the industry formally abandoned years ago and some vendors quietly retained because clients recognise a currency figure. A tool leading with AVE loses marks and we say so plainly on the page.

What we look for instead is flexibility — competitor sets you define, exports that survive contact with a client deck, and metrics you can actually explain.

What to weigh

What separates the good ones.

  • 01Whether the methodology is published or hidden behind a proprietary score
  • 02Share of voice competitor sets you can define yourself
  • 03Whether reporting exports somewhere your client will actually read
  • 04Any lingering reliance on advertising value equivalency

Common questions

Is advertising value equivalency still used?

It is discredited and still shipped. AVE assigns your coverage the notional cost of an equivalent advert, which measures nothing about whether the coverage worked. A tool that leads with it loses transparency marks here.

What should PR measurement actually track?

Whatever connects to the outcome the work was commissioned for. That varies, which is why we score flexibility over any particular metric — a fixed proprietary index that cannot be interrogated is less useful than a plainer number you can explain to a client.
