Pitching and outreach

AI pitch writing and media outreach tools

Pitch drafting, personalisation and follow-up.

Pitching is where AI tooling and good practice pull in opposite directions, and any honest review of this category has to say so. The economics of the software reward volume. The economics of your relationship with a journalist punish it. A tool that makes it trivial to send four hundred personalised pitches has not solved your problem, it has industrialised the thing reporters complain about most.

So workflow fit here means something specific. We look for tools that make the research step better rather than merely faster: pulling a journalist’s recent coverage into the drafting view, showing what they have already written about your space, flagging when someone has covered a competitor. That work makes a pitch land. Merge-field personalisation does not, and journalists have been able to spot it for years.

We also weigh sending infrastructure heavily, because it is where the quiet failures happen. Domain reputation, authentication, throttling, whether replies come back to a real inbox — none of it is exciting and all of it determines whether your pitch is read or filed.

Deliverability problems in this category are usually self-inflicted.

What to weigh

What separates the good ones.

  • 01Whether personalisation draws on real coverage or just merge fields
  • 02Sending reputation and deliverability controls
  • 03Follow-up logic that does not annoy the recipient
  • 04Whether the tool discourages volume, or quietly encourages it

Common questions

Does AI personalisation actually work on journalists?

Only when it is grounded in something real. A line referencing an article the journalist wrote last week reads differently from a merge field with their outlet name in it, and reporters spot the difference immediately. We score this on whether the tool cites its source.

How many journalists should a pitch go to?

Fewer than most tools make it easy to reach. The category has a structural problem: the software gets more valuable as you send more, and your reputation gets less valuable as you send more. We factor that tension into workflow fit.
